How Do You Find a Cheap Domain Name?
Every domain name has to be registered through an accredited registrar, of which there are only a couple of dozen in Australia. Everyone else who will sell you a domain must go through one of these registrars. Registrars have resellers who sometimes get domain names cheaper than the general public and then resell them on to their clients. Unless they have significant volume they’re unlikely to be cheaper than the registrar. If they do have such volume, you need to consider whether you’ll be getting appropriate support when you have queries – will you be talking to someone, sitting in a phone queue or filling in forms at an on-line help desk? And then if there is any sort of complication, the reseller may have to refer back to the registrar.
Yes, you MAY get a cheaper domain name by trawling the net to find the cheapest reseller. This could be time consuming. We suggest our clients contact one of the accredited registrars and work directly with them for domain registration. Click here for a list of registrars accredited with auDa, the governing body. No, we are not on it under any name at all, so we don’t have an axe to grind here.
Our advice is to look at a few for pricing to make sure you're not paying massively over the odds, then give them a call to get an idea whether you can work with them. Mostly it's set and forget, but at the beginning you, your host or your designer may have to deal with them a bit, so it pays to use the one you feel most comfortable with.
Most commercial enterprises in Australia use a web address suffixed with .com.au so that's the best one to get. Also it's good if it's the name of your business. Then your clients and potential clients are more likely to guess right if they just type the address into the browser.
Because domain names are not expensive any more it might be advisable to pick up the .net .au version as well. Bear in mind that if you don't it's accessible to your competition. Your web designer can redirect it right to your .com.au web site - that's far better than it going to your competitor. At Great Webs we have www.greatwebs.com.au, www.greatwebs.net.au, www.great-webs.com.au and www.great-webs.net.au. We do a similar thing with the Local People domain name.
